My mummy told me that the Prime Minister of our country, Australia, Tony Abbott said that:
“I think all parents know that occasionally the best thing that we can give a kid is a smack, but it can never be something that hurts them.” (Tony Abbot, Prime Minister, Australia, 2013)
If it’s true that he said that, I don’t agree.
I think the best thing a parent could give a kid is love – a hug or a kiss.
That’s a really stupid comment…no offence. I don’t think it is very good that someone that is running our country says that. I only agree with one bit, that you shouldn’t hurt kids, but the rest is just weird.
Hitting a child isn’t teaching a kid how to be happy and healthy. It teaches them how to be violent.
Agreed, LilyO! And I think if parents get into the habit of smacking their kids, they’ll get used to being smacked and it won’t matter to them because they know what’s coming. It’s pretty lazy parenting, really 😛
Hi Liv
Parents who do that probably are lazy and mean. Come again Liv!

Hi beautiful Lily
Yes – well said Lily…..I am sure Mr Abbott would not appreciated a “gentle smack” from those who think he is out of line! There are more mature ways to get your point across as an adult (parent).
I remember when my parents hit me when I was little. It just made me very sad and angry. I didn’t understand how that had anything to do with what they were trying to get me to do or learn.

Such great wisdom lovely Lily….well stated…. Hitting doesn’t solve the issue, love is the answer…. Good for you and thank you for sharing your thoughts. I have very clear memories of being disciplined with wooden spoons, among other things and they are lasting, not happy memories…. I wish you fabulous happy loved memories to write about… Happy childhood precious treasure…
Hi Genevieve
I hope you have been able to create lots of good memories as well – as long as you’ve got those, you’ll be happy. Please come again!

Hi Lily!
You are a very wise young lady. The best thing any person could give to any other person is love. If everyone lived by this simple rule the world would be a much happier place. I think something we could all try to do is use our words to explain what is right and wrong, to enter into a sensible one on one conversation to express what we need.
Keep those loving thoughts flowing x
Hi Lyndall
I agree. The world would be a much happier place if we had a rule where parents couldn’t hit their children. Thanks for reading and commenting on my blog. Please come back soon!

Hi Lily
I’m a friend of your Mum from way back. I am so very happy to read your blog and your very wise words. There is too much negative stuff in this world already, so I agree love, hugs & kisses definitely makes the world a happier and more beautiful place. Have a lovely day and a big hug to you & your Mum & Dad xxx
Hi Shell-B
I’m glad you are happy to read my blog – please do come back soon!!

Hi Lily, if only our prime minister inspired me as much as this blog post. Well done you for voicing reason and compassion in the public sphere. Thank you!
Isabelle
Hi Isabelle
I do try to inspire people. Thank you for checking out my blog. Please come back soon!

I totally agree Lily, I think you are spot on. Hitting a child is wrong, scary for the child and teaches them absolutely nothing. We should treat others how we would like to be treated, and that definitely means kids. I agree it is very worrying that the leader of our country thinks it is OK.
Good for you for saying what you think and keep it up! 🙂
Hi Jacqui
Yes it is bad that some parents are hitting their children. Thank you for checking out my blog. Please come back again!

Hi Lily,
I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting you only in mums tummy- followed you closely through fb and so proud of you and your mum. In Sweden it is illegal to smack your kids something which is very much frowned upon.Love, communication and explaining. Use to hate this when I was young often wished I didn’t have to explain so much and just get “grounded” or a smack – realize especially now the importance of speech so keep up the blogging and lots of love to you both and dad:)
Hi Caroline
That’s a good rule in Sweden. Thanks for reading my blog!! Come back again soon.

Great insight Lily…..if only some of our politicians had that much common sense!
Very wise and beautiful words Lily. Wouldn’t it be great if Mr Abbott read your blog and commented.
Hi Andrew
